Hand Wash At Home:
Times have changed. The internet is here and it is a great way to share facts, news, opinions, and more. Washing a car has come a long way from Mr. Miyagi's lessons for a young Daniel-san. There is a lot of great information and a lot of misleading information out there. A lot of products, promises, techniques, and keyboard warriors can make a simple task seem very complicated. We will quickly decode some good advise, some not so good advise, and maybe even toss in a couple tips from our professionals. You'll be ready to spit shine in no time!
Bad Advise: If you're out of soap, grab the dish soap.
Your car's finishes are much different than your home's finishes. They were not created equal. You should always avoid using household cleaners, sponges, scrubbers, towels, etc on your car whether you're cleaning inside or out. They will almost always have unintended negative consequences.
Good advise: Use car specific products
You should always use products designed for a car. Whether you have a favorite car shampoo you order from the internet or you go down to the auto parts store and grab a nice looking bottle, perhaps with a familiar brand name. These products are designed for and tested on vehicles, so they are generally safe for the masses. The best thing to do is look for a pH neutral soap. These are the safest and most gentle effective cleaning that shouldn't harm waxes or sealants underneath. You can also get "wash and wax" type soaps. These offer a little convenience and some hydrophobics, but the effects are not as long lasting as applying a good sealant.
Pro Tip: You can wash with 1 bucket
Ever heard of the "2 bucket method"? What about the "3 bucket method?" Read our article on "10 washing tips your detailer wants you to know" for more on both. But what if you don't have 2 buckets for washing? Or you're still struggling to keep the soapy water clean? What if your vehicle is extra dirty? Seems strange, but when that's the case, you can drop down to 1 bucket. No, we aren't just giving up. We're being smart. When you drop down to 1 bucket, leave your wash mitt in the cabinet. Grab a few clean (new is best) microfiber towels and put them all in the soapy wash bucket. Use one at a time, folded in 4's, and you now have 8 clean sides to wash with! The trick here is that when you're done with an area or a towel, you don't dip it back into the soapy water. You put it in your dirty towel bin. Now grab another clean microfiber towel from the clean soapy water, and repeat the process until you've finished using it. Washing this way ensures you will always be using a clean rag to touch your paint and you never have to introduce any contaminates that you washed off back into your clean water. This is a great option to take with you to a "do-it-yourself" style carwash. For the same reasons you want to avoid automatic carwashes, you want to also avoid the "foam brush" at the DIY wash. It can be a great option if you don't have a pressure washer or a place to clean your car, but bring your own tools!
